Our business began in 1970 when Bob Zabel purchased an already existing monument
company in Manitowoc. In 1989, Modern Monuments in Sheboygan was added. Zabel
Monuments is a family business which is now owned by Bob’s son, John. Three generations
of memorialists became involved in the business when John’s son, Eric, joined the business
in early 1997. In 2005, Eric earned the title of “Certified Memorialist.” This certification is the
highest level within the memorial profession. Zabel Monuments is proud to have one of only
three “CM’s” in the state here for your benefit.

We are members of the Wisconsin Association of Monument Builders and the Monument
Builders of North America. All association members are held to the highest standard for
quality and customer service. Eric recently completed his presidency on the Wisconsin State
Association Board of Directors, making him the third generation of Zabels to hold that
position. We are the only firm in the state to have three generations of presidents. This shows
the tremendous respect given to us by our peers and our constant commitment to the industry.

We have a full service shop with John and Eric doing all of the designing and lettering on the
stones. We set all of our own memorials with our truck and continue to do our own lettering in
the cemetery for individual’s final date of death. While many companies are subcontracting
that out, we feel it is important that we continue to do all of own work as it completes the circle
of trust with our customers.
